Ann Lee, founder of the Shakers, is one of the first notable women inventors - a true "mother of invention." She lived a rough but devoted life. She invented many tools, devices, and items (such as flat brooms, clothes pins, rocking chairs, an early "computer", and possibly the circular saw). Many of her inventions still enhance our lives.
Shakers invented many things but their humility prevented them from taking the credit. They developed an airplane before the Wright Brothers and in the same city (Dayton Ohio). The helped the North to win the Civil War with their innovations and inventions. These inventions may have eliminated the need for slavery. While the Shakers are responsible for many things in our modern world, they were not credited with these contributions.
