Polyester Pride

By Kathryn Ellen Davis

For anyone who has suffered unfairness or abuse at the hands of another, this is the story that will let you know you're not alone — and give you hope to overcome.

Lisa Jones had always willingly been "Daddy's little princess." A product of one of the most economically deprived and socially intolerant areas of the country — the clamflats along the shore of northern Maine — she learned to hold all men up on a pedestal. For the women of her culture, marriage was the pinnacle to be attained in life.

Lisa begins to have a rude awakening when she marries her high school sweetheart and suddenly finds herself living with an alcoholic who roughs her up regularly. A tailspin of increasing physical abuse and social isolation forces her onto a rocky path where, against formidable odds, she struggles to find her own inner strength, pride, and, finally, freedom from her past.

Sensitive, vivid, and thought-provoking, this debut novel from a talented writer will linger in your mind long after you have finished the last page.

Kathryn Ellen Davis is an attorney with a passion for helping people hurt by inequality, oppression, or abuse. She grew up in the poorest county in Maine where beliefs are firmly fixed and where everyone knows what their neighbors are up to. Graduating summa cum laude from the University of Maine at Machias, she went on to earn a law degree at the University of Maine School of Law. She now lives in central Maine.
